I’ll admit, I have a bit of an addiction to musicals. I take it a step further by getting especially addicted to the music. I have a whole musical playlist on Spotify that grows by the day. So it happened that I was listening to the discover weekly playlist looking for new songs to add to my playlists. I stumbled across this song called Six. It happened to be a song from a musical by the same name, and my curious self decided to look for the rest of the album from the musical Six.

It didn’t take long before I found the album, and the rest of the songs happend to be just as amazing as Six. I was immediately hooked to the songs, playing them non-stop from the moment I found them. That also got me quite curious to what the story behind the musical was. So I opened Google and began my research. The results of that research are too amazing not to share with you.

Six is written by two university students. Yes, you’re reading it right. Two university students. Toby Marlow was asked to write a musical that would be played on the Edinburgh Fringe, the world’s biggest arts festival. While in poetry class the idea of Henry VIII and his six wives came to his mind, and he decided to ask his friend, Lucy Moss, to write the musical with him. They did their research and wrote the complete plot, all the songs and casted the complete cast themselves. Six premiered at the 2017 Edinburgh Fringe festival.

That in itself is an interesting story already, but it gets better. Six caught the attention of some professional musical directors and they decided to give the show a real musical debut having it tour through the UK throughout 2018. That turned out to be a big success, because the mini-tour and the first UK tour resulted in a West End debut on 17 January 2019. Originally it was supposed to be a 16 week run, but it got extended until January 2021.

In mid 2019, Six had its first overseas success when it premiered at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater in the USA. After an extended run they did a North American tour due to the success of the show in Chicago. The tour stopped on 22 December 2019 because the show was soon to book another big success.

Six was set to start on Broadway on 13 February 2020, but due to the current pandemic it has been postponed, hoping to play the premiere as soon as possible. They’re also set to start their second run in Chicago from 8 July through 25 October 2020. As if that wasn’t enough success Six is also currently playing their second UK tour, which will run for most of this year.

You must be questioning what Lucy and Toby are currently doing. Well, here’s your answer. Toby continued to write musicals next to also playing a role in them here or there. We can’t wait for his next musical masterpiece. Lucy went into directing. Her own musical well to say. She traveled with all the productions of Six, directing all of them. That makes her Broadway’s youngest female director in history. A little round of applause for her, please.

I have this playlist on non-stop repeat, singing and dancing along to all the songs at every moment of the day. Go have a listen and I’m sure you’ll enjoy it.
